Pradeepan has been working since 1998, within its values and capacities, to ensure food security for marginalized, Dalit, and socially excluded communities. The organization believes that food security is not limited to access to sufficient food, but is deeply connected to the availability of healthy, safe, sustainable, and environmentally responsible food systems.
With this perspective, Pradeepan promotes vegetarian food systems as a meaningful contribution toward improving the global food system while also protecting the environment. Vegetarian diets support human health and significantly reduce pressure on land, water, forests, and biodiversity. At the global level, animal-based food consumption can be reduced by up to 50 percent, creating space for a more sustainable and plant-based food system that benefits both people and the planet.
To achieve this, the organization works closely at the village level through women’s groups, youth groups, and farmer collectives. Regular food awareness programs, community meetings, and training sessions are organized to promote balanced nutrition, traditional diets, local grains, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and sustainable food practices rooted in indigenous knowledge.
In the field of vegetarian food security, Pradeepan encourages dairy-based livestock rearing and the protection of agriculture-supporting animals, ensuring that animal husbandry contributes to livelihoods and nutrition without exploitation. This approach strengthens household food security while supporting sustainable rural livelihoods.
Pradeepan also remains strongly committed to the expansion and protection of forests, and to conserving food systems based on forest produce, fruits, medicinal plants, and traditional grains. The organization actively supports innovation and protection of diets derived from forest resources and biodiversity-rich ecosystems.
Through these integrated efforts, Pradeepan strives to build a healthy, safe, and sustainable food system that advances human health, environmental conservation, and social justice, while strengthening community resilience for the future.
